Sept. 11, 2009, Flushing Meadows, N.Y. -- Just one day after playing in one of the world’s biggest juniors tennis tournaments -- the U.S. Open -- Laurel Springs School student and professional tennis player Jordan Cox was honored with the prestigious Seena Hamilton Tennis Scholarship. Ojai, CA (Vocus) June 2, 2009 -- Nick Marks ‘Waken’ Paschal’s career launch has been amazing. At only 18 years old, in his first ten months as a visual effects artist, Nick is already credited with four feature films and a worldwide video game franchise project.
Wow, what a week! Most of the LSS staff members have had their eyes glued to the TV sets, watching the excitement at Wimbledon over the past few days. With so many of our students in the competition, theres barely time to run to the kitchen for a snack between matches.

Wade Robson, LSS Alumnus casts "Believe," a new Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas starring Criss Angel, which began Sept 12th. Evan King hasn't missed much. Well, he skipped kindergarten, but the 16-year-old senior from Chicago is now surveying his college options with confidence, having found he could excel at tennis without abandoning the lifestyle of a typical teenager. John Richard Caridad was honored with the Congressional Award Gold Medal at the Capital in Washington, D.C. on June 19, 2008 Laurel Springs School sponsored the Tennis Channel Open this year, in Las Vegas, Nevada, March 6-11th. Laurel Springs is pleased to announce our Young Artist Student Achievement Award goes to Adam Cagley, who is currently a senior with Laurel Springs, and carries a 4.7 GPA. Haley Martin was a doubles finalist with her partner, Blair Shankle, of Texas, in the National Championship Clay Courts 14 girls division. The tournament was held in Plantation, Florida, July 14 to 22. Haley won a "Silver Ball," and is currently ranked #10 in the USTA rankings in singles.
Joe is a part time Laurel Springs Student as well as an attendee to his middle school. Joe was picked to represent the US at the Para PAn American Games in Rio De Janiero. Joe will be swimming in 4 Events on the US Paralypmic Team.

Derek Sommers was successful again this year to be selected to play in the American Fine Arts Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York this June. He has been working on his piano in the meantime, with considerable success.
Alexa is back playing tennis, and playing well, after her long recovery from injuries suffered in a motor scooter accident. The girls were both honored yesterday by John Hopkins for having one of the high scores on a full SAT they took in December (while in 7th grade at Laurel Springs). Additionally, Gennelle scored among the top ten in California in an STB (Spatial Test Battery), and she was the only girl among the ten! I am enclosing the official news release for your info. This morning, on USTA site, is a story about the tennis players who are winning here at the "Easter Bowl" so far. One of our lovely students is being interviewed after her win. Here's what's on the site. Kristen Stewart has been reviewed here before; when she was in "The Panic Room," with Jody Foster several years ago. She's really busy these days, with all the hoopla over "The Messengers," and two new movies; but she still finds the time for her homework! What people may not know is that while Hayden Panettiere is a senior at LSS, just a few years ago, Thomas Dekker, who plays Claire's only friend in a recurring role on Heroes, was also an LSS student. He graduated in 2004 and played a lovely song at our graduation ceremony!
Clare is a 17 year old junior, and has been a LSS student for 3 years. She loves being a Laurel Springs student and riding for LSS Equestrian Team in the Interscholastic Equestrian League (IEL). We begin the girls' roundup in middle America with seventh-grader Sarah Bowen, who was born in Oklahoma City and now lives in Edmond. Bowen had a spectacular month of January, climbing 25 spots to #152 in the rankings with her 9-1 record in two major Missouri Valley tournaments.

Each month, the Hot 100 features players who have been performing well on the court. These players have challenged themselves - and won matches against quality competition. The February lists feature the one hundred boys and girls who most improved their ranking during the month of January.
Kellen Damico of Parker, Colorado sits on top of the junior tennis world. At the age of 17 (first year U18), Kellen already owns a Wimbledon Junior Doubles Championship as well as reaching a career-high #6 in the ITF Junior Rankings. He is also the #1 senior on the College Recruiting List. The impressive results are only the beginning of his long journey towards the top of the game.
Nick was recruited by the local varsity baseball team to be their "Stat Man" and maintain their website. He also gets to practice with them! He is doing this for a PE and an Elective credit at LSS. The picture shows him, little guy with pad of paper, and then the three coaches of the Varsity team.
Rae Porter-Blackwell, a tenth grader at Laurel Springs School, is sporting "Blues Brothers" sunglasses and hat and wearing a big smile these days. Rae is a member of the California Northstars Synchonized Skating Team sponsored by the VacaValley Figure Skating Club from Vacaville, California. The team took silver at the 2007 USFS Laurel Springs Alumna does it again... Laurel Springs Alumna Tanith Belbin won the Gold Medal for Ice Dancing at the State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championship. Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje have made an immediate impact since joining forces in ice dancing. Many of our skaters have been busy, competing in Regionals, at Sectionals, The Grand Prix, and the Junior Nationals so far this year. But the season will culminate with Nationals in Spokane.
Daniel has had a very successful competitive season in the Junior Men's division this year. The United States captured Gold in Ice Dancing, as the brother-sister duo of Madison Hubbell and Keiffer Hubbell won the Free Dance and the title. The most exciting project for the girls right now is a Television pilot for the Disney Channel. The working title is "Meet the Restaneo's" which is a show about Jewel and Blaire and their adventure through life.
Sundance Festival Announces Five Showings for "The Ten"
This was the first year for the Mike Agassi "NO QUIT" Championships as a USTA Level 3 national tournament - and the first year for Laurel Springs School to sponsor a pasta dinner. We're a great team! Also LSS Scholarship recipient, Asia Muhammad ran away with the Girls 18 Trophy. This was a huge win for her and for her Vegastennis.com and Laurel Springs Sponsors! A Chinese student and U.S. business writer take a new approach to education by launching a free business writing and marketing consultation service.
Danica Davidson, a recent graduate of Laurel Springs, has been writing most of her life, telling stories since she was three. She wrote her first novel when she was seven and found her niche. Since she's young and passionate about writing, she can handle writing-for-hire, as she's demonstrated in her various magazine and newspaper publications. Still, it's novels that are her passion. She has a Greek myth based series for young adults (which is currently being presented to a publisher) and several others ready to go.
The girls are both going to be training at the USTA High Performance Program, Mary will begin August 25th, she will become the youngest to train at the facility. Elizabeth has been training there for two months now.
Amy Lynn, a sophomore at the University of Arizona, graduated from LSS in 2005. She has been chosen to receive the competitive UA/NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Research Internship for the 2006/2007 school year. The internship provides a chance for undergraduates to participate in research, policy, science writing, or science education within a mentored experience. Amy is a math education major, but still aspires to be a beach bum someday!
He tied for 2nd place in the supermini class of 12-16 year olds 42 fastest kiddos in the nation, ending up with a 3rd overall. Event is the AMA Amateur National held at Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills TN, August 1-5th. Champions on Ice at the Los Angeles Staples Center was the scene of a long-awaited meeting last Saturday. Tanith Belbin, Olympic Silver Medalist, three-time National Gold Medalist, and Laurel Springs Alumna, invited our Director, Marilyn, and LSS Head of Marketing, Amber Walker, to be her guests for the show.
Stephanie Liu qualified for the US Kids World Championship golf tournament in Pinehurst, NC. On June 16th, she shot an amazing 6 under par and a hole in one. She received a trophy from Eagle Springs Golf Course for the hole in one and is looking forward to the championship. She has also placed first in an advanced age group for six Gateway Jr.PGA events, often scoring considerably less than several age groups above.
In recognition of Clare Richardson's outstanding academic achievements, the Congressional Youth Leadership Council has nominated Clare to represent the State of California as a National Scholar at the 2006 National Young Leaders Conference to be held in Washington, DC.
Diandra Newlin, a 15 year old student of Laurel Springs is currently working on the Thriller film "DREAMKILLER" where she plays the supporting role of Natalia Nemet, the sister of a resident doctor in a Neurobiology facility. The Executive Producer is Clyde Ware of Delaware Pictures/Raleigh Studios. The movie should be out late 2006-07.
Two very special Laurel Springs Students, Nate Schnugg and Kellen Damico, have realized a dream they've coveted for many a moon; to win at Wimbledon! I met these wonderful young men at Easter Bowl last year, and they were kind enough to tell me that I've been playing favorites. That I favor the girls at Laurel Springs, by featuring them in our Students in the News, and not the "boys." Well, I told them I would, and wow, what an opportune time to do this! They've really made all of us here at LSS proud! Laurel Springs Student and Surfer, Chad Compton, is quite the dude. At such a young age - to be on the cover of Surfer Magazine so many times! We're rooting for you Chad! 5th grade Laurel Springs student, Jade Brenner-Katz, was recently a featured guest on "Critter Crusades," a TV show hosted by Missy Woodward, honoring ordinary people on extraordinary missions that save animal lives. Brooke Conway, 17, a junior at Laurel Springs Private School in Ojai, Calif., has been accepted to attend the National Honors Convocation on Medicine at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles from June 30-July 9.

Apr 2006 G18 Dbles Quarterfinalist (with Julia Cohen another LSS Student), This year Elena has been participating in the YMCA Youth & Government program. Last weekend, at the leadership conference in Paso Robles, Elena was elected Forum Lieutenant Governor for the state of California. As Forum Lieutenant Governor Elena will preside over the Forum Senate when it convenes next month in Sacramento at the State Capitol Building for the 58th annual Model Legislature and Court.

Below are some photos of Amy Castle at the recent Giffoni Hollywood Film Festival. Amy was selected by the Giffoni Board of Directors to represent U.S.A. and present the winning film award at the Kodak Theater. Giffoni brings kids together from all over the world to watch and judge children's films.
Alanna and Gennelle Dedek will be twelve on June 27. They began homeschooling this past year. They finished their curriculum at the end of March, and began looking for something more challenging that would allow them to work at their own pace. Then they found Laurel Springs! Laurel Springs has the flexibility for them to go at their own speed! Yes! Laurels Springs own "little girl with the big voice" Daveigh Chase, whose voice you heard as Lilo, in "Lilo and Stitch" is now cast as As Rhonda Volmer, in HBO's "Big Love." They are airing a new episode every Sunday @ 10pm~ with repeat viewings throughout the week and also available on HBO on Demand!!!

Alexa, still 15, had an outstanding run in New York. Playing only her 2nd WTA Tour event, she reached the semifinals at Forest Hills (a US Open tuneup event) knocking out the #1 seed Akiko Morigami en route. Following that, she played for the first time in the US Open Women's Main Draw at Flushing Meadows and won her first round match in straight sets! She was the youngest player in this Grand Slam event. We are so proud of her. She will skyrocket in the WTA tour rankings making her the youngest American in the Top 250 players on the WTA tour!
I have some news to report concerning Marissa Spector
Marissa Spector, 7th grade, earned a spot in this year's Jr Championships in Jamestown, NY by placing in the Eastern Great Lakes Regional figure skating event in Cleveland as a Juvenile Pair. Marissa and her partner Alex Darnell finished 5th out of 10 teams.
Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto won their first U.S. senior dance title and were delighted to go back to the old 6.0 system. In his first ever-public performance 5-year-old Aleister Pinkerton wins 1st This has been a good year for us. We've been strong from the beginning."—Ben Agosto The West Side Story free dance described as a "last memory of what was" provided a look into the future for Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto. Alexia Glatch just got back from the Orange Bowl in Key Biscayne this week, playing the 16 and under division as a 14-year-old. Laurel Springs Students Taking Over U.S. Figure Skating Scene in 2003! This seventeen year old pop singer was named the winner. A new film company, Warior Films released its first snowboard video, Civilians and has been drawing a lot of attention, including coverage from Snowboarder Magazine. Tyler has just completed his third and final season on the PAXTV hit show "Doc", which tapes in Toronto, Ontario. Listen to Back to Me, the debut CD from Aubrey Collins, and get ready for big surprises. Jeffery has made some very impressive accomplishments in the past year and I'd love to share them with the rest of the Laurel Springs community. Thora Birch plays Liz Murray, one of two daughters being raised by loving, but drug addicted parents (Kelly Lynch, Michael Riley). For ABC's attempt to turn the "Eloise" book series into a TV movie, success hinged on Sofia Vassilieva in the title role, a job that required her to skate a thin line between cherub and brat.
Dr. Tess Coleman (JAMIE LEE CURTIS) and her fifteen-year-old daughter, Anna (LINDSAY LOHAN), are not getting along. Scout is one of our new students at LSS and she has her first lead in a movie!! And better yet Mika Boorem is another student of LSS who will be in the same movie with Scout. Columbus, Ohio native Lil' Bow Wow, known simply as Shad by his friends, first began to perform his raps when he was only six years old. Ronda won the Rendezvous in Montreal, placed second in the U.S. Open and won the Fall Classic. There were hundreds of high school students who submitted essays in 2003 UNA-USA High School Essay Contest, and it was extremely difficult for them to reach the national top 10 spot. Scout just booked her first Pilot...Titled: "Class Actions," for Lifetime Television/Sony Pictures. Nick Marks has been chasing his dream of riding freestyle motocross almost everyday for four years. About eleven years ago I started playing golf; however, not until prior to my freshman year of high school did I realize what it would take to reach my goals and dreams in this great game. Jeff Lambin is hard at work building another Kids Kart in the garage of his Gardnerville home. Try holding your nose while breathing through a coffee stir straw.

Brittany Renee started out Daryl Tardy's new segment called "Writers Block" Brittany's pen name is Brittany Renee' and her book is called Shadows Of A Heart. Shantel Jordan and Jeremy Barrett (Southwest Florida FSC) are in a difficult situation. They are now U.S. junior champions, but she can't go anywhere internationally anytime soon because she is too young. My name is Melinda Sullivan, and I am an 11th grader with Laurel Springs. This is my first year with the school, and I decided to try it because I am a professional dancer and my jobs were getting in the way of public school. In December and January, various horse show associations host formal banquets at which year-end awards are given to riders who have excelled over the course of the past season. Having ridden the year as an 11 year old, Allison Van Sickle was feted as the overall Children's High-Point Champion in the San Fernando Valley Horse Show Assoc., taking top honors in all 4 of the divisions in which she competed, (Children's Hunters, Low-Children/Adult Jumpers, Children's/Adult Jumpers, and Equitation for Riders 17 and Under). At age 10 James saw a picture of a contrabassoon in a musical dictionary and decided that it was the coolest instrument he had ever seen. Russell Gotthoffers " Make a Difference Day" project won for the state of Wyoming for the second year in a row. This was his third year of raising money to donate to the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation. He sells notecards with artwork created by kids with NF. For the last 2 years Avon has doubled his donation. This year he was able to send over $6,000 to NNF.
Ronda made the Olympic judo team at 63 kg. She won the trials June 5th. She also won both her matches at the Titan Games and received the Texaco Rising Star Award for best athlete under 20 across all sports.
In 2004, Andrea performed the lead role of The Lilac Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty.
Clare received a more formal "recognition" from Johns Hopkins. It reads, "The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth certifies that Clare Richardson PLACED WITH DISTINCTION in Mathematics and Verbal as an Eighth Grader by scoring higher than the average college-bound twelth-grade student on the
SAT I: Reasoning Test in JHU's 2004 Talent Search." She is now eligible to enroll in JHU Center for Talented Youth distance learning courses and summer college programs. Mahaley (aka Haley Hamilton) filmed a national commercial for SBC, she appeared in a VOGUE editorial, as a featued model, which will be out by November, she will be in the USA World Showcase for modeling and acting in late August, and will be in the Miss Georgia Teen USA on November 4th!
Hannah competed with her horse, Papillon, at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta, this summer winning the ATCO-ITEK Stake Jumper Class at the North American.
Brittany Herbert was chosen as 2004 Youth Dance Ambassador at a Dance Troupe Inc. Competition in Dayton Beach Florida. As a Youth Dance Ambassador she was invited to dance with the Country's best in that competition and won 1st Place with her Solo in Lyrical. She danced to Josh Groban's "To Where You Are". Katie Dano is enrolled in 8th grade english @ Laurel Springs. She competed last week @ the USFSA Central Pacific Regional Figure Skating Championship. She took 1st place. This means she will be competing at the USFSA Junior Nationals Competition which will be held in Jamestown, New York the first week of December.
Amanda's teacher, Mrs. Cook, suggested we send something in... Amanda is an 11 year old competitive figure skater that skates both individually and as part of a pair team with her 16 year old partner, Chris Trefil. Amanda recently competed in the Central Pacific Regional Championships held in San Jose, CA. This competition is the qualifying competition for the US Figure Skating Junior National Championhships. Amanda was 2nd in her individual event and she and Chris were 1st in their pair event, and so she is headed to Jr. Nationals in both Intermediate Ladies and Intermediate Pairs. Jr. Nationals are held December 1-4 in Jamestown, New York. Amanda and Chris were silver medalists at last year's Jr. National Championships as a Juvenile Pair team, and she began studying at Laurel Springs last February so that she could better balance her school and training needs. Laurel Springs has been a great help with this effort and all of her hard work on and off the ice has paid off!
Kayla Steckel, with a grade point average of 4.2, was named Valedictorian of California City Middle School. We are so proud of this lovely girl, and she is a marvelous dancer as well! My name is Kirsten Stewart. I am a 14 year old working actor in the motion picture industry. Public schools are not set up to accommodate my often hectic schedule. Nor were they equipped to offer me the kind of education I require for a University. Laurel Springs Distance Learning School offers me a higher quality of education, allows me to advance at my own pace and makes it possible for me to achieve my goals. She spent several months in South Africa filming for this movie and learning how to ride a zebra! Hayden plays Channing Walsh, a Kentucky country girl. Kamerin placed 1st in the State of Michigan Level 5 Gold USAG Gymnastics Meet. She took first on all four events -Vault, Beam, Bars & Floor - as well as the All Around. Karina competed in Odense at the Danish National Figure Skating Championships and won Novice Ladies. You can check out her website at: www.karinajohnson.com. After 'Lord of the Rings', Elijah Wood could have taken the starry Hollywood route. But not this blue-eyed boy. He tells Craig McLean about his plans to launch a radio station, set up a record label, produce films... and even find time for some acting.

Brandon Liu Tae is an LSS Martial Arts Jr. Master Jennifer is a wonderful Dancer and former LSS Student For Alex Artemov and his parents, a flexible school schedule means more time to spend together on their shared passion for gymnastics. Allison Van Sickle has just been named the top qualifier for the "World Series" of children's show jumping by winning two out of three qualifying events in September. (held at the Oaks Blenheim Fall Tournament in San Juan Capistrano; the Los Angeles International Jumping Festival in L.A. and the Del Mar National Horse Show in San Diego.)
Marissa heads to Denver, CO in a week to compete at 2006 USFS Junior Championships... Laurel Springs School is proud to announce that our student and U.S. ice dancer, Tanith Belbin became a U.S. citizen last week, and is now eligible to represent the United States at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in
Torino, Italy. Belbin and her partner, Ben Agosto, are
the reigning World Ice Dancing Silver Medalists and U.S. Champions. Rae hopes to continue skating through high school and college. Her goal is to attend a major university that has a competitive collegiate synchronized skating team. She plans to major in biology, and eventually earn a degree in veterinary medicine.
