Caroline Wozniacki Shines at U.S. Open
Glatch, McHale, Kudla, Muhammad, Capra, Brodsky just some of the Laurel Springs studens who star at the on of the world's biggest tennis events! Sept. 15, 2009, Ojai, Calif. -- The world got a close-up and personal look at tennis' newest teenage sensation Caroline Wozniacki during the recent U.S. Open. Denmark's Wozniacki is a current Laurel Springs student and just one of a handful from the distance learning program located in Ojai who participated in the seasons final Grand Slams, one of the world’s biggest tennis tournaments. Laurel Springs founder Marilyn Mosley Gordanier said students like Wozniacki and their performances away from their studies continue to amaze her. "We are just so proud of Caroline and the recent run she had getting all the way to the U.S. Open final," she said. "Caroline provides an excellent example for our younger students to know that they can follow their dreams and achieve their goals while continuing their studies." Wozniacki wasn’t the only Laurel Springs student -- past or present -- making national headlines during the Open. Laurel Springs alum Alexa Glatch played Serena Williams in the first round on Arthur Ashe Stadium court in front of a national televised audience. The next night, current student Christina McHale lost on the same court to Maria Sharapova in another first-round match. Former student Evan King delayed the start of his school year at Michigan where he will play on the tennis team to play in the junior portion of the event. The 17-year-old King took out the No. 5 seeded player in singles and then teamed with another Laurel Springs student Denis Kudla to upset the No. 1 doubles team in the world two hours later. Kudla wasn't the only Laurel Springs student pulling off the huge upset as Asia Muhammad took out the No. 1 girls' player in the world and then eliminated fellow Laurel Springs student Gail Brodsky. Like Kudla, Beatrice Capra made it all the way to the quarterfinals showing that she is someone to definitely keep an eye on in the future with an impressive win over Muhammad along the way. Other highlights from the Open included Laurel Spings' Junior Ore warming up with the legendary John McEnroe. Other juniors warmed up the pros, including Jordan Cox who was watched by hundreds as he warmed up Andy Roddick for this third-round match.
