The other day, I received an email from one of our alums. *Mike graduated in 1994, and is now in his mid-thirties. I’ve known this young man since his early teens, when Laurel Springs offered a blended day school and distance learning program. I had worked closely with him and his parents to ensure that his Personalized Learning Plan fit his style of learning, interests, and goals. In Learning Styles language, he’s a “hands-on” learner and “inventor.” The things he created with his hands, the things he conjured up in his mind, were amazing. He was an inventor in the making.

This young man was also quiet and thoughtful. His communications, although short, were very meaningful. I still remember some of our conversations.

I also had the opportunity to travel with Mike to Brazil, for the 1992 Earth Summit. Not only was he a great travel partner, he also looked after his fellow students. He was an all around great guy.

So, when I received an email from Mike the other day saying, “Save the Date,” I was deeply touched. My first thought was, “he’s getting married.” But when I read on, I saw that the date we were saving was not for a significant family celebration, it was to take me to lunch.

I felt so much gratitude that mentoring a student could create a relationship that would hopefully last a lifetime. What a gift!
